Bella was a mill girl. She also worked as a Cook in the restaurant at a department store to make ends meet. Little did she know that history was about to change her life forever.
War was declared, Bella was called up like many of her age to help on the home front. Not just any job, but repairing Lancaster Bombers. With three other Girls, Bella was literally sent to Coventry to train. First on Whitley’s - fitting the panels and then when training was over, working on Lancaster’s.
Through the blitz she lived with a family in Coventry. It was not just aircraft that took off for Bella in Coventry but romance too, as she met and fell in love with Walter.
After the war, both moved back to Leeds. Walter immediately left for Germany and Bella became a riveter! But cooking was still what loved and part-time she cooked for the Nurses at the local Hospital.
A full time Mum, Grandmother and now Great Grandmother, Bella’s next chapter came when she moved in to become a resident with HC-One. In her twilight years she reminisces about her wartime adventures, looking back on a wonderful life, family and people round her in her new found home.
